Dyspareunia - Patient Education

DYSPAREUNIA (pain with sex):\n- May be related to endometriosis. Consider evaluation and treatment with surgery.\n- May be related to pelvic floor dysfunction, such as vaginismus. Occasionally pelvic floor physical therapy can assist.\n- May be related to vaginal dryness. Hormonal supplementation and lubricants (preseed, coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil [avoid oils if using condoms], KY jelly [avoid if trying to conceive]) may be helpful.\n- May be related to nerve problems - topical analgesics may be beneficial. Neuromodulators like gabapentin may also help.\n- Tricyclic antidepressants may also prove helpful.
