Anemia in Pregnancy - Treatment Protocol

Abstract

Mild anemia noted. Continue prenatal vitamins. Encourage intake of foods rich in iron & B vitamins (red meat, organ meats such as liver, green leafy vegetables, black strap molasses). If cannot adjust diet, then increase supplements with over the counter 325 mg ferrous sulfate or 325 mg ferrous fumarate daily. Best to take with a source of Vitamin C, like orange juice.\nIf constipation is an issue, then the best form of iron may be a product called Floradix (Iron +herbs), which can be found on Amazon and other similar sites. Otherwise, safe stool softeners in pregnancy include Colace, Miralax, and prune juice.
