CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10): Fertility Use
CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10) is a lipid-soluble antioxidant and an essential component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, directly involved in ATP synthesis. Its role in reproductive medicine is dual.
In oocyte quality, CoQ10 availability declines with maternal age, reducing mitochondrial ATP production in the developing egg and contributing to spindle dysfunction and chromosomal aneuploidy. Small studies have shown improved embryo quality with CoQ10 supplementation, though large controlled trials are limited. In male fertility, seminal CoQ10 concentrations directly correlate with sperm count and motility; supplementation improves sperm parameters and reduces markers of oxidative stress.
In RRM preconception care, CoQ10 is sometimes incorporated into nutraceutical support protocols as part of a broader antioxidant approach. Dosing is deferred to the treating clinician based on individual evaluation.
