Vulvar Observation
The external observation of cervical discharge at the vulva, performed at each bathroom visit using folded white tissue to assess sensation, appearance, and elasticity of any discharge present. CrMS standardizes the observation as entirely external. Internal or digital cervical checks are not part of the method, distinguishing it from some sympto-thermal applications that involve internal mucus sampling. What the woman observes at the vulva with tissue, in ambient lighting, at the moment of observation is the data point. Sensation during ambulation throughout the day is recorded alongside the tissue check.79 The external-only protocol has practical advantages: it is reproducible across a full day of activity, it requires no instruments, and it captures the same cervical output that Billings research established as a reliable fertility signal. All VDRS entries derive from these observations.
