Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fertility Context)

Omega-3 Fatty Acids are a class of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from marine sources. They exert anti-inflammatory effects by competing with arachidonic acid for cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzyme pathways, reducing prostaglandin E2 production and inflammatory cytokine activity.

In reproductive medicine, omega-3s are associated with improved oocyte quality, reduced endometriosis-related inflammation, improved sperm motility and morphology, better endometrial blood flow, and reduced risk of preterm birth. In RRM preconception care, omega-3 supplementation is incorporated for its anti-inflammatory and immune-modifying properties. Specific dosing and formulation are individualized under clinical guidance.
