NaProTECHNOLOGY integrates family planning and women's health care
NaProTECHNOLOGY joins family planning and women's health care by working cooperatively with the cycle. This 2011 overview article reviews published results on pregnancy avoidance, ovulation disorders, cycle symptoms, infertility, and pelvic surgery. The system rests on Creighton Model charting.
Key Findings
A meta-analysis of five Creighton Model System studies (1830 couples, over 17 000 couple-months of use) reported 99.5% method effectiveness with perfect use and 96.8% use effectiveness with typical use.
The article reports ovulation within ± 3 days of the Peak Day in 100% of cycles and calls the Peak Day the single most studied observation in natural fertility regulation.
Serial ultrasound across 3000 cycles of spontaneous ovulation identified ovulation disorders. Luteinized unruptured follicle syndrome and afollicularism are associated with absolute infertility.
The mucus cycle score was significantly decreased in luteal phase deficiencies, endometriosis, polycystic ovaries, and infertility with regular cycles. Documented ovulation disorders also showed decreased scores (p values all < 0.03).
A 2010 report on 23 years of near adhesion-free reconstructive pelvic surgery described a highly significant reduction in adhesion scores at follow-up laparoscopy.
Interpretation
The article is a narrative review organized by clinical problem. Its results section summarizes findings published elsewhere, including a meta-analysis of prospective trials of the Creighton Model System. The ovulation findings combine prospective charting with serial ultrasound and hormone studies. The article presents NaProTECHNOLOGY as an approach that identifies underlying disease and states that IVF programs skip over root causes. The author describes the approach as highly beneficial for women who choose it.

NaProTECHNOLOGY, developed by Dr. Thomas W. Hilgers, is one of the named methods within restorative reproductive medicine (RRM). RRM is united by cooperation with the ovulatory cycle, evaluation of the underlying cause before treatment, and care that includes both partners. Prospective cycle charting gives clinicians information about ovulation and luteal function, which supports diagnosis of the cause of infertility.

Abstract
The paper presents the main concepts of NaProTECHNOLOGY. Such problems as family planning effectiveness, targeted hormonal assessment of the menstrual cycle, ovarian hormone and target organ dysfunction, disorders of human ovulation, cooperative progesterone replacement therapy, premenstrual syndrome, postpartum depression, unusual bleeding, infertility and antiadhesion therapy are discussed.
