Avoiding-Related Pregnancy Rate
The avoiding-related pregnancy rate counts the pregnancies that happen while a couple was using the method to avoid one. It gathers the method's own failures together with teaching and user errors. It leaves out pregnancies that followed a chosen risk on a fertile day.
Keeping those groups apart matters, because what a couple wants can change from cycle to cycle. In a cohort of 701 couples using the Creighton Model FertilityCare System, avoiding-related pregnancy at 12 months ranged from 3.11 to 4.28 per 100 couples, depending on how unresolved cases were counted.1 Pregnancies after contact on a known fertile day counted as achieving-related instead, at 12.84 per 100 couples.1
This is one reason charting is honest work. The chart records what a couple knew and what they chose.
