Varicocelectomy
Varicocelectomy is surgery that ties off or removes the swollen veins of a varicocele so that blood no longer pools around the testicle. The aim is a cooler, healthier setting for sperm to form. It belongs among the restorative operations offered to men.1
Male factor is often left unexamined. In a claims study of about five million insured members, 14.5 percent of men with a diagnosed varicocele had the surgery within nine months of an infertility diagnosis, while 73 to 81 percent of men had begun IVF.2
IVF does not treat a varicocele. Surgery does. Both partners deserve a real evaluation first.
