Canada's National ART Register Counted 21,697 Egg Retrievals in 2024
CARTR Plus, Canada's national ART register, counted 21,697 egg retrievals at 36 clinics in 2024, from data the clinics submitted. About 29 out of 100 own-egg retrievals led to a live birth within 12 months, counting retrievals from 2022. The share was about 41 out of 100 under age 35 and about 3 out of 100 at 43 or older.
Key Findings
- In 2024, 36 clinics reported 30,313 patients, 21,697 retrievals, 27,682 embryo transfers and 10,532 ongoing pregnancies, own and donor eggs combined. Cycles started in 2023 led to 8,870 live births.
- Of own-egg retrievals done in 2022, 28.6% led to a live birth within 12 months. By age: 41.3% under 35, 20.3% at 38 to 40, 3.4% at 43 or older.
- In 2024, 14,676 of 18,196 own-egg retrievals had all embryos frozen, and 19,312 of 20,959 frozen transfers used one embryo. Of 7,005 own-egg live births in 2023, 221 were multiple live births.
- Male Factor was the most often listed reason for own-egg stimulation cycles in 2024 (n=6,077; 26.4%), then Unexplained Infertility (n=5,328; 23.2%). Categories are not mutually exclusive.
- The 2013 to 2023 elective egg banking pathway counted 6,242 retrievals, 65,517 frozen eggs, 208 thaw cycles, 219 embryo transfers and 70 live births.
Interpretation
CARTR Plus is built from data that Canadian ART clinics submit about their own cycles. The report calls its estimates descriptive and says no formal statistical testing was done. The report flags that only five Québec clinics sent data for 2023. Rates are per retrieval, per transfer, or per primary transfer: each person's first transfer after retrieval. The 12-month rates include retrievals with no transfer. Live births lag the other counts by a year. Ongoing pregnancy counts (a heartbeat seen on ultrasound) rise as outcomes arrive up to 9 months later. The 70 elective egg-banking births came from 208 thaw cycles, and the report gives no rate per banked egg.
RRM Context
RRM is built on finding the cause first and on caring for both partners. Male Factor led the register's list of reasons, and RRM care includes the man's health from the start. RRM reads Unexplained Infertility, the second most listed reason, as undiagnosed: a cause not yet found. Charting the cycle with a fertility awareness method, such as the Creighton Model, gives that search a daily record.
