ART Live Birth Rates in Australia and New Zealand Fall With Age

This annual registry report covers 108,913 ART (IVF and related) treatment cycles carried out across Australian and New Zealand clinics in 2022. For fresh embryo transfers, comparing women under 30 to women over 44, live birth rates fell from 43 out of 100 to 3 out of 100.

Key Findings

  • Australian and New Zealand ART units performed 108,913 treatment cycles in 2022. Compared with 2021, cycle counts dropped 2.1% in Australia and, in New Zealand, by 2.4%.
  • Per embryo transfer, live births reached 25.9% (fresh) and 32.1% (thawed) in 2022, counting all cycle types. The overall rate rose from 27.3% in 2018 to 29.9%.
  • Age changed outcomes sharply: per embryo transfer, women under 30 saw a 43.3% (fresh) or 38.1% (thaw) rate of live birth, compared with 3.3% and 14.4% for women over 44.
  • Tracking 37,810 women from their first ART cycle in 2019-2020, 38.9% had a baby by the end of their first complete cycle, rising to 59.5% by a sixth cycle.
  • Single embryo transfer rose from 90.6% of cycles in 2018 to 94.2% in 2022, alongside a fall in the multiple birth rate from 3.2% to 2.7%.

Interpretation

This is an annual registry report. The report covers cycles reported by all 91 ART units in Australia and all 7 in New Zealand for 2022, so the figures describe national practice across every unit. Most rates here are counted per cycle or per embryo transfer. One exception tracks 37,810 women for two to four years. The cohort's 78.1% estimate for cumulative success after six cycles rests on one assumption the report cannot test. Women who stopped treatment are assumed to have succeeded at the same rate as those who kept going.

RRM Context

Most ART registries count success per cycle, and each new cycle resets the count. ANZARD is different: it also follows one group of women for several years. That is closer to how restorative reproductive medicine tracks outcomes per couple over time.
