Gestational Diabetes (GDM)

Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar first found during pregnancy. Pregnancy hormones make the body resist insulin. Blood sugar climbs when the pancreas cannot keep up.

This insulin resistance comes from the placenta. In some women a metabolic tendency was already there before pregnancy. Risk of type 2 diabetes later runs close to ten times higher than after a pregnancy with normal blood sugar.1 Restorative care looks at metabolic health before pregnancy, since the same insulin problem upsets the cycle.

In two randomized trials of pregnant women carrying extra weight, myo-inositol cut the rate of this condition.23
