SOFT Method (Mucus Observation)

SOFT is the memory word for the three steps of a mucus observation in the Creighton Model FertilityCare System: sensation, observation and the finger test. Sensation is what a woman feels through the day. Observation is what she sees on tissue, checked outside the body. The finger test is how far the mucus stretches.

The steps exist so that every woman records the same mucus the same way. The method pairs them with set terms for stretch, color and sensation. It also uses a picture dictionary of sixteen photographs, drawn from review of 444 mucus observations in 157 women.1

A standard vulvar observation turns a daily note into data. A restorative workup begins from the chart, and a vague note cannot be compared.
