In Sweden, 4 in 10 Own-Egg IVF Retrievals in 2021 Led to a Delivery
Sweden's national IVF registry covers nearly every clinic in the country. For women using their own eggs, about 4 out of 10 egg retrievals in 2021 led to a delivery within a year, counting all embryo transfers. Chances fell with age, and twin births have declined for years to among the lowest rates in the world.
Key Findings
Sweden's Q-IVF registry counted just over 25,500 fertility treatment cycles in 2022, including IVF and donor insemination, across 6 public and 18 private clinics, capturing almost 100% of Sweden's treatments.
Among 10,815 started fresh cycles using a woman's own eggs, 6,606 reached embryo transfer, and 27% of those transfers ended in a birth.
Counting every embryo transfer from one egg retrieval within a year, the delivery rate rose from 29.8% in 2007 to 43.6% in 2021, the most recent year reported.
Delivery rates per fresh embryo transfer fell with age: 35.2% for women under 30, versus 9.4% for women 42 and older, using a woman's own eggs.
Twin birth rates in 2022 were 2.63% for fresh cycles and 2.00% for frozen cycles; Sweden's overall multiple birth rate after IVF is described as among the lowest in the world.
Interpretation
This is an annual report from Sweden's national IVF registry that did not run as a controlled trial. The report describes outcomes for nearly every clinic's patients in one treatment year and does not explain why some cycles worked and others did not. With no comparison group, the age-related decline and drop in twin births are real-world patterns; they do not prove a single cause. Sweden's one-embryo policy explains most of the fall in twin births reported here. The patients are Swedish, treated under Swedish clinical practice. Protocols, embryo counts, and results vary by country, so these figures do not transfer directly to another health system.
RRM Context
National registries like Q-IVF show real IVF outcomes better than one clinic's own marketing numbers, since almost every Swedish clinic reports in. IVF bypasses the cause of infertility. IVF does not find or treat that cause. A registry like this counts how often the bypass leads to a birth. It says nothing about what caused the infertility. Restorative reproductive medicine works the other way. The restorative approach looks for the cause first, then treats it.
